You see it often enough, those total home renovations. This was a dated apartment that had been lived in for years. The organization behind the rental has completely renovated this apartment to see if they can develop a new concept and eventually give all their homes a make over. I was asked to take both the before and after photos. As you can probably see the first photo is before, the second is after.
Je ziet het vaak genoeg voorbij komen, van die totale renovaties in woningen. Zoals ook bij de volgende foto's het geval is betrof het een gedateerd appartement dat jarenlang doorleefd is in de verhuur. De organisatie achter de verhuur heeft deze woning compleet gerenoveerd om te kijken of ze een nieuw concept kunnen ontwikkelen en al hun panden op deze manier een make over kunnen geven op termijn. Aan mij de taak om zowel de before als after foto's te maken. Het spreekt ongetwijfeld voor zich, maar de bovenste foto's is voor de renovatie en de tweede foto's is na de renovatie.
Living room / Woonkamer
When taking the photos after the renovation, I tried to use the same viewpoint as the first time as much as possible. That way, you can really see all the changes. I had saved all the photos on my phone and walked around with it during the photoshoot to photograph everything as well as possible.
Met het maken van de foto's na de renovatie heb ik geprobeerd zo exact mogelijk hetzelfde standpunt te gebruiken als de eerste keer. Zo zie je pas echt goed alle wijzigingen. Ik had alle foto's op mijn telefoon opgeslagen en liep er tijdens de fotoshoot mee rond om alles zo goed mogelijk te fotograferen.
Balcony / Balkon
The windows had not yet been cleaned after the renovation and looked quite dirty. Now I have to say that the amount of rain that day was not favorable for the windows either. That's why they were slid open completely during the second photo shoot.
De ramen waren nog niet gezeemd na de verbouwing en zagen er behoorlijk vies uit. Nu moet ik zeggen dat de hoeveelheid regen die dag ook niet bevordelijk was voor de ramen. Vandaar dat ze bij de tweede fotoshoot helemaal opengeschoven waren.
I only took a view photo during the first shoot, but you can already see a bit of how nature has changed in the photos from the balcony. For the first photo shoot, I was there in the middle of August and for the second one at the beginning of November. The green of the trees is now brown and bare.
Alleen bij de eerste shoot heb ik een uitzicht foto gemaakt, maar bij de foto's van het balkon kan je ook al een beetje zien hoe de natuur is veranderd. Voor de eerste fotosessie was ik er midden augustus en bij de tweede begin november. Het groen van de bomen is inmiddels bruinig en kaal.
Kitchen / Keuken
This is the most striking improvement of the whole house as far as I am concerned. The person in charge of the project told me that he always tries to create a house in such a way that he could live there himself. Just for the idea, the rest of the building is still in the state of the non-renovated photos and it is four gigantic apartment blocks behind each other that don't create the most charming atmosphere. Creating something out of this space that still looks inviting and perhaps makes you forget the rest was quite a challenge.
Dit is wel de meest opvallende verbetering van de hele woning wat mij betreft. Degene die het project begeleid vertelde mij dat hij altijd probeert om een woning zo te creëren dat hij er zelf zou kunnen wonen. Even voor het idee is de rest van het gebouw nog in de staat van de niet gerenoveerde foto's en zijn het een viertal gigantische flatgebouwen achter elkaar die samen niet de meest charmante sfeer vormen. Om dan van deze ruimte iets te creëren dat toch uitnodigend oogt en wellicht de rest doet vergeten, was nog best een uitdaging.
Although the assignment was to take exactly the same photos as the first time, I thought it would be fun to show some details from the renovation. I quickly think of materials, such as the kitchen worktop and, later in the series, the new floor. The project manager also really wanted to see the spotlights in the kitchen and the radiator knob. Apparently, this is really the thing for professionals to see after a renovation. Previously, the knobs had been colored yellow and this one is really great and photogenic as far as he is concerned.
Ondanks dat de opdracht was om exact dezelfde foto's te maken als de eerste keer, leek het mij toch heel leuk ook wat details van na de verbouwing te laten zien. Zelf denk ik dan al snel in materialen, zoals het aanrechtblad en zoals verderop in de serie ook de nieuwe vloer. De projectleider wilde ook heel graag de spotjes in de keuken op de foto en de radiator knop. Blijkbaar is dit voor vakmensen onderling echt het ding om te zien na een renovatie. Voorheen zaten er geel gekleurde knoppen op en dit is echt een toppertje en wat hem betreft een fotogeniek exemplaar.
What I also noticed about the renovation is that this (refrigerator) cabinet in the corner of the kitchen sticks out a lot less than in the first picture. Before the renovation, there was also a cupboard in the corridor on the other side of this wall, which has now been removed. This has now been removed, making it a lot less spacey in total and thus creating extra room in the kitchen.
Wat mij zelf ook opviel aan de verbouwing is dat deze (koel)kast in de hoek van de keuken een stuk minder uitsteekt dan bij de eerste foto. Voor de renovatie zat er in de gang aan de andere kant van deze wand ook een kast en die is nu weggehaald. Waardoor het totaal een stuk minder ruimte inneemt en er zo extra ruimte gewonnen is voor in de keuken.

The corridor / De gang
As I already wrote about the kitchen, you can see in the top photo that the cupboards on the right-hand side have been removed. On the left-hand side, the cupboards have been replaced by sliding doors instead of the original ones. To be quite honest, I think this is a bit of a shame since I just like the original cabinets better. You see this type of built-in cupboards much more often in Stockholm and I would have chosen to refurbish them and keep them.
Zoals ik al schreef bij de keuken, zie je hier op de bovenste foto dat aan de rechterkant de kasten zijn weggehaald. Aan de linkerzijde is de kastenwand vervangen voor schuifdeuren in plaats van de originele kastdeuren. Heel eerlijk, ik vind dit zelf een beetje zonde aangezien ik de originele kasten gewoon mooier vind. Je ziet dat soort type inbouwkasten veel vaker in Stockholm en ik had er zelf voor gekozen om ze op te knappen en te behouden.
Bedroom / Slaapkamer
In the bedroom, the main difference is in the walls. Where originally a self-made work of art had been created, everything is now white. The brick motif was wallpaper, but the blocks in black and white were hand-drawn. On the wall next to the door, a landscape was painted and now a cupboard has been put there.
In de slaapkamer zit het voornaamste verschil hem in de muren. Waar aanvankelijk een zelfgemaakt kunstwerk was gemaakt, is nu alles wit. Het bakstenen motiefje was behang, maar de blokjes in zwart wit waren zelf getekend. Op de wand naast de deur was een landschap geschilderd en daar is nu een kast neergezet.
Bathroom / Badkamer
As I wrote earlier, the building itself is not a charming place. There will be a lot of people living there and, like in most buildings, you will share a laundry room with each other. With this new concept, a washing machine has been placed in the bathroom so that you can run your household from home without having to use the somewhat shabby facilities.
Zoals ik eerder ook al schreef, het gebouw op zich is geen charmant optrekje. Er zullen in totaal heel veel mensen wonen en zoals in de meeste gebouwen deel je dan met elkaar een wasruimte. Met dit nieuwe concept is er een wasmachine geplaatst in de badkamer om zo volledig thuis je huishouden te kunnen runnen en daarvoor geen gebruik hoeft te maken van de ietwat armoedige faciliteiten.
